ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I have drawn all my life. As an adult I worked in watercolors for quite a while but didn’t like the lack of control or the lack of brilliant colors that are inherent in that medium. I took a class in colored pencils taught by Mary Hobbs of Cleveland, Ohio, and discovered I’d found the vehicle in which I wanted to work.

Colored pencils allow me to use the many photos I’ve taken as the basis for paintings. I like detail, different textures, and balancing composition and color in drawings. I want viewers to find a story in each of my drawings. I’ll provide the starting point, and they can provide the rest.

I do like the control provided by colored pencils but am working to become looser and to communicate more of my own feelings in my work. That, I think, is what true artists work to achieve and are able to do.
